Louisiana’s economy posted encouraging results in the second quarter of 2026, reaching a record 2.01 million nonfarm jobs in May and remaining above the 2 million mark for four consecutive months.

The state added 16,700 jobs over the past year, with construction accounting for 9,300 of those jobs, more than any other sector, as major industrial projects continued across the state. Baton Rouge led all metro areas in job gains, while Monroe and Lake Charles also posted strong growth fueled by major construction projects.

Compared with its Southern peers, Louisiana performed well, ranking fourth among the South’s 16 states in both year-over-year nonfarm job growth and real GDP growth.

The report also highlights several challenges that could affect long-term growth. While recent economic gains have been driven by a strong pipeline of industrial construction projects, new business formation continues to lag most Southern states, raising questions about sustaining growth after those projects are completed.

In addition, Louisiana’s unemployment rate remains slightly above the Southern average, and homeowners’ insurance premiums continue to be among the highest in the nation, creating ongoing cost pressures for residents and businesses.
