LMTA issues transportation and logistics advisory

The Louisiana Motor Transport Association has issued guidance for the trucking industry—including those who transport chemicals—in interpreting Gov. John Bel Edwards’ stay-at-home order that began yesterday.

“As it relates specifically to our industry, broad exemptions for transportation and logistics are in place,” a release from LMTA reports.

Among those exempted are truck drivers who haul hazardous and waste materials to support critical infrastructure, capabilities, functions, and services; and those who transport chemicals—including those supporting tank truck cleaning facilities and workers who manufacture packaging items.

Also exempted are retail fuel centers such as gas stations and truck stops, and the distribution systems that support them, as well as those engaged in transport related to the nation’s food supply.

Employees supporting or enabling transportation functions, including dispatchers, maintenance and repair technicians, warehouse workers, truck stop and rest area workers, and workers that maintain and inspect infrastructure (including those that require cross-border travel);

LMTA officials say they asked the governor to exempt the trucking industry from any stay-at-home order, and they feel the industry was.

“Consistent with the spirit of the order, I do strongly suggest that exempt companies consider the extent of their staff who are essential to operations, and allow those who can work remotely to do so,” LMTA Executive Director Chance McNeely said in a statement.
