Survey finds strong community support for $5.8B Hyundai steel mill

A new poll shows broad support among River Parishes residents for Hyundai’s proposed $5.8 billion steel plant near Donaldsonville, though concerns about pollution remain high, The Center Square writes.

The JMC Analytics survey, commissioned by the Sierra Club, found 71% of likely voters in Ascension and St. James parishes back the project, while 15% oppose it. Still, 60% said they’re worried about toxic air and water pollution along the industrial corridor.

State records show Hyundai has applied for a stormwater discharge permit as construction prep continues at the 1,800-acre RiverPlex MegaPark site.

Environmental advocates have urged Hyundai to pursue cleaner “green hydrogen” technologies, a move supported by 60% of respondents.

Louisiana Economic Development officials say the project remains active, with early infrastructure work underway. A Nov. 1 town hall will give residents a chance to question Hyundai and local officials about the project’s economic benefits and potential environmental impacts.
