The R/V Taani, a regional class research vessel, was floated for the first time last week using a drydock at Bollinger Shipyards in Houma. The vessel is being constructed by Bollinger as part of a project led by Oregon State University and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

The project is charged with delivering three nearly identical ships to the U.S. Academic Research Fleet, reports the Oregon State University News Service, with construction staggered about six months between each vessel. The ship will provide scientists with valuable new tools to study critical issues such as rapidly changing ocean conditions and human impacts on the marine environment, reports Oregon State University News Service.
