Saronic Technologies is investing $300 million to expand its shipyard in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana Economic Development announced Wednesday. The expansion is expected to create 1,500 direct new jobs.

The investment will increase production capacity at Saronic’s Franklin shipyard, strengthen Louisiana’s advanced manufacturing base and create new opportunities for skilled workers in “one of the state’s most historic maritime communities,” according to LED.

Saronic, an autonomous vessel startup, came to own the shipyard in April when it acquired Louisiana-based shipbuilder Gulf Craft. It retained 35 employees when it did so and has since grown to more than 100.

The expansion will add some 300,000 square feet to the shipyard, including a new production line dedicated to the assembly of large vessels. Construction began in November and will wrap up by the end of 2026. Expanded operations will begin in 2027.

The 1,500 new jobs Saronic is creating will have an average annual salary of $87,936, 46% above the average wage in St. Mary Parish.

Gov. Jeff Landry shared the following statement:

“Saronic’s decision to invest in Louisiana speaks to the strength of our workforce and the state’s leadership in defense manufacturing. Louisiana has long built the ships and technology that keep America strong. This project shows that our people, our ports and our pro-growth policies are creating jobs and securing our place at the forefront of America’s defense economy.”

The state offered Saronic a “competitive” incentives package to land the project, including a $2 million performance-based grant and $3 million from the Economic Development Award Program. The shipbuilder is also expected to participate in Louisiana’s Quality Jobs program.

Saronic’s long-term goal is to invest over $2.5 billion to develop its ambitious Port Alpha—what it’s calling “the world’s most advanced shipyard,” designed to produce hundreds of autonomous vessels annually. The company is actively seeking a location for Port Alpha.
