Officials broke ground on the new $5.8 billion Hyundai steel plant in Donaldsonville on Friday, reports WBRZ.
Site preparation for the project began several months ago; however, construction cannot start until the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality approves the proposed air permit.
“We are grateful for the partnership this community has shown us,” says Hyundai Senior Vice President Hyeong Jin Kim. “We look forward to deepening our investment in Ascension Parish and creating lasting opportunities for its people and for future generations.” Hyundai leaders say they expect to start commercial production at the facility during first quarter 2029.
