Mosaic Fertilizer and its subsidiary, Tampa Port Services, have agreed to pay a $103,449.50 federal penalty to settle alleged equipment safety violations linked to an anhydrous ammonia release at their Faustina industrial complex in western St. James Parish, reports L’Observateur.
The settlement follows an Oct. 27 release of anhydrous ammonia that exposed four contract workers. Two workers received oxygen treatment before returning to work the same day, according to state incident records.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency alleged the companies violated federal chemical safety requirements by failing to maintain equipment to prevent hazardous releases. Under the settlement, Mosaic and Tampa Port neither admitted nor denied the violations but agreed to resolve the case and waived their right to appeal. Read more from L’Observateur.
