A fast-moving bill in the Louisiana Legislature aims to expand the number of wood pellet mills in the state, reports Verite News.
Rep. Chuck Owen proposed House Bill 670 shortly after learning of the industry, which would streamline pellet manufacturing regulations and steer state resources toward workforce training, financial incentives and infrastructure upgrades tailored to the industry’s needs.
British energy company Drax operates the two large pellet mills in Louisiana — one in Urania and another near Bastrop. Together with a nearly identical Drax facility in Gloster, Miss., the mills churn out billions of wood pellets to meet demand in the United Kingdom for electricity generated by wood, or what the industry markets as “sustainable biomass.” Read more from Verite News.
