Louisiana engineering firms bring home 13 excellence awards

Thirteen engineering projects performed by Louisiana-based engineering firms have been awarded 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Louisiana.

Forte and Tablada’s 2018 Sunshine Bridge Emergency Repair (surveying and mapping technology) project for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development won the Grand Conceptor Award. In October of last year, the Sunshine Bridge’s lowest horizontal chord and the lower lateral braces were severely damaged by a crane mounted on a barge tow closing a major corridor for commerce. Forte & Tablada assessed the damage so the bridge could be repaired. Forte and Tablada developed several custom applications utilizing laser scanning and custom devices for the project.

Grand Awards went to T. Baker Smith in the Building/Technology Systems category for the North Lafourche Levee District pump station monitoring system project; TRC Companies in the Structural Systems category for its work on the I-49 North, Segment K; Forte and Tablada in the Surveying and Mapping Technology category for its work on the Sunshine Bridge Emergency Repair; GeoEngineers and Coastal Engineering Consultants in the Water Resources category for its work on the Caillou Lake Headlands Restoration for the Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority; C.H. Fenstermaker & Associates in the Transportation category for its design/build work on the U.S. 90/I-49 South Interchange for the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development as well as for its work in the Industrial & Manufacturing Processes and Facilities category on a heavy-haul road for Sasol USA; Digital Engineering in the Special Projects category for its work on the Bogue Falaya Shoreline Protection and Paddlers Launch for the City of Covington; and Meyer Engineers Ltd. in the Small Projects category for its work on the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery for the Louisiana Facility and Planning Control.

Honor awards went to H. Davis Cole & Associates for its work on the Town of St. Joseph New Water Treatment Plant & Distribution System; T. Baker Smith for its work on the Bayou Gardens Boulevard Extension for the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government; Stanley Consultants for its work on the Water Hammer Hazard Mitigation-Elevated Storage Tanks for the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans; Modjeski & Masters for its work on the Sunshine Bridge repairs for the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development; and T. Baker Smith for its work on the Falgout freshwater enhancement for the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government.

The People’s Choice Award Winner was C.H. Fenstermaker and Associates for the U.S. 90/I-49 South Interchange.

Projects were scored based on uniqueness and/or innovative application of new or existing techniques; future value to the engineering profession and enhanced public awareness/enthusiasm of the role of engineering; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner needs.
