Starbase Louisiana, SpaceX’s planned launch site in Vermilion Parish, could bring a major economic and workforce boost to Acadiana, but local education and economic development organizations say they still lack enough information to prepare for the project, The Current reports.
State and local officials have offered nearly $24 billion in tax incentives tied to projections of 3,000 direct jobs and nearly 10,000 indirect jobs, according to Louisiana Economic Development, yet SpaceX has so far posted only four positions for the Louisiana site: a civil engineer, senior construction and government affairs managers, and a real estate attorney. All four positions are currently based at SpaceX’s Starbase in Brownsville, Texas, and require eventual relocation to Louisiana.
Louisiana Economic Development is handling discussions with SpaceX and is expected to provide local institutions with more detailed information on job descriptions and required skills, but organizations such as LEDA, OneAcadiana and Lafayette-area schools say they have received little specific information about future workforce needs.
Officials anticipate potential demand for welders, fabricators, machinists, technicians, communications workers and employees in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, aeronautical and structural engineering. Local institutions are continuing existing workforce programs while waiting for more details, with some looking to expand manufacturing and skilled-trades training.
Brownsville offers a potential example of both the opportunities and challenges. SpaceX has contributed to job growth but also put pressure on housing and infrastructure. Regional officials there say collaboration among schools, colleges, economic development groups and industry helped develop specialized aerospace training.
Acadiana leaders similarly expect some workers to relocate to the region while emphasizing the need to train and retain local students.
